By Max Miller-
This week, we interviewed Mrs. Gottlieb, who has taken over for Mr. Newman as the chair of the science department.
Are there any changes in the science curriculum this year now that you are head?
I can never fill Mr. Newman's Shoes and as a result, I plan to do things my way. This year the department will begin the process of creating a detailed curriculum map, called scope and sequence. As of now, the course offerings are the same as last year with the exception of freshman biology. Ms. Gleicher, who came back to ICJA, is using storylining to teach freshman biology. Students will explore the principles of biology through real-world applications and building upon what they already know.
What’s your vision for sciences at the Academy in a few years?
Over the next number of years, the science curriculum will be developed to engage all students to practice effective science reasoning. 21st century resources will be utilized to ensure student growth within each course and from year to year. Student need and interest will drive curriculum decisions. A wide range of courses will continue to be offered to support all learners and ensure our students are ready for college!
What areas do you think we can improve in?
As teachers, we work to understand our students so that we can maximize learning by keeping their interest and needs in mind.
What areas do you think we’re excelling in?
I’m really proud that we continue to offer so many different courses to ensure that every student has the science education they need. I am also proud of my team that have committed themselves to be lifelong learners and continue to utilize all available resources and utilize best teaching practices. I am appreciative to have inherited this team of talented educators that consistently and effectively collaborate to maximize student learning.
