The world wide public health crisis caused by the novel coronavirus has caused many changes for Ida Crown Jewish Academy athletes. The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) has issued guidelines that detail plans and restrictions to keep athletes safe. Also, Ida Crown Jewish Academy plans to continue to set forth their own guidelines which many go above and beyond those of the IDPH and IHSA. Rabbi Matanky, the dean of Ida Crown, explained in an email that “whether or not our interscholastic sports will begin is still up in the air and dependent on IHSA, IDPH, and our medical committee.”

XC Running through a Pandemic

Ida Crown’s cross country team has been running and completing challenges over the course of COVID-19. Ezra Jaffe, one of the coaches of the team , explains the great measures that he has taken in order to keep the team running and happy. “It’s been challenging getting the team ready for the 2020 XC season. We have tried to have an all school virtual 5k race, but the school had some concerns over peer pressure this could create. We have been unable to do distance team conditioning drills over the spring. . . but both Coach Hunter and I have been communicating with team members and encouraging them to run.”

COVID-19 has changed what Ida Crown’s sports will look like this year. In response to COVID-19, safety guidelines have been adopted by some sports, other sports have switched seasons, and some sports have been canceled.

New Boys’ Soccer Team Coming to ICJA

ICJA plans on offering soccer for male students starting next fall.
Until now, soccer was only offered to girls at Ida Crown. After numerous emails back and forth between Noah Brody, Noam Braun, and Rabbi Matanky, with additional efforts by Chuck Moscovitch, the new director of athletics Coach Peter was put in touch with Noah Brody, to offer solutions with scheduling and coaching. After Noah Brody and Moshe Lodkin went around signing people up for soccer, the administration finally greenlighted a boys’ soccer team.
Running Aces Return for Another Strong Season

The Running Aces have started their short, two-month 2019 season strong.
After last year’s conference sweep by the Aces, the team lost many important runners, including Yonah Steinberg, Tzippy David, and Tova Oliff. In order to repeat as champions, the running Aces needed to run hard over the summer and get back in shape.
