By Melinda Burgin-

Right here at ICJA, sophomore Eugene (Moshe) Lodkin is the school’s violin virtuoso! Eugene plays in the Chicago High School Youth Symphony, one of the most prestigious outlets for young violinists.

He began playing at the age of seven, after being inspired by one of his friends.  He practices daily for at least 30 minutes and frequently performs in a Klezmer band alongside alum Jenna Brody. Eugene also enjoys band at ICJA, saying it is “the best. Period.”

Through all these years of work, he has learned more than just how to play and perform.  Eugene has developed patience, and methods to cope with stress and nerves through his efforts at the violin; both skills aid him throughout his life.  Violin, Eugene says, is often repetitive, but repetition playing violin can encourage motivation and perseverance in other areas, such as school.

Eugene asserts that “somethings you can make difficult because you perceive it as impossible,” and violin has helped him learn to maintain an open mind and feel that anything is possible.

Eugene also enjoys connecting violin to other areas of his life. One of Eugene’s favorite type of music to play is Jewish music, especially Purim music.  He utilizes music for chesed opportunities as well; for example, he plays for the elderly frequently.  His favorite thing about music is how he can interpret music in many different ways.  Eugene calls music “a whole new world! You can play whatever you want.”

Despite how busy violin keeps Eugene, it is not his only serious hobby. He also enjoys playing chess and is on the wrestling team at ICJA.  On Sundays, he participates in Sunday Night Learning at KINS in West Rogers Park.

Eugene makes a point of appreciating those who have helped him, thanking his teacher, Mr. Kronenberg, and his mom.
