ICJA Removes Controversial Vaping Signs After One Day; Pledges to Take New Measures

Ida Crown removed new signs that the FDA sent out to schools nationwide after just one day.

These signs were intended to combat vaping and warn students against the dangers of vapes, yet both students and faculty complained about the vulgarity of these posters.

These posters may have been eye-catching because of their crude sayings, but the administration did not feel that these posters were appropriate for a school setting, nor did they think they would be effective. The individual messages of each poster were not reviewed before they were placed in the bathrooms which is how they went up in the first place.

The posters come at a time when the FDA has come under fire for failing to adequately regulate vaping products. Juul, a company that manufactures e-cigarettes, has been accused of false advertising and marketing its products for teenagers.

As of November 8th, the CDC reports forty-two people have died in a mysterious illness related to vaping. At a Cross Country race in September, coach Ezra Jaffe made an impassioned plea to the athletes not to vape, warning the team about his nephew, who became ill with the vaping-related illness.

Despite removing the posters, Ida Crown still takes a very strong stance and intends to implement effective measures to help combat the vaping epidemic. According to Dr. Kahan, the school did not agree with the specific message of these posters, but however hope to put different ones up in their place to show the schools disapproval of vaping.

In addition, the administration is considering adding silent vape detectors in the bathrooms. The school already monitors the cameras throughout the property to prevent students from being able to vape. The school hopes that these blocking measures will discourage students, keeping the school vicinity and students’ lungs vape free.
