Ida Crown Makes Changes Due to COVID-19

Every new school year always brings some change, but no change to the student’s everyday school life has been as drastic as the school year of 2020-2021.

Abraham H. Dachman, MD, the ICJA  Board President and Professor of Radiology at the University of Chicago; Ben H. Katz, MD, Professor of Pediatrics; and Steve Goldberg, MD -- along with the rest of the Reopening Advisory Committee -- worked tirelessly to create an intricate plan to keep the students and teachers safe.

The plan stays aligned with many of the guidelines created by the CDC for reopening schools: Routine cleaning, providing necessary stations to sanitize, setting up a system to screen students for any illness, and allowing students to participate in classes remotely are just a few of the elements taking part in the reopening procedure. Common practices like social distancing and wearing masks will also be ensured in and out of the classroom.

Lunch and free periods have also been altered to fit health requirements: Lunch will be eaten in the room where students studied in the period immediately before lunchtime (either fourth or fifth period classrooms-- depending on the students’ lunch periods), and free periods will be enjoyed by students outside the building while still socially distanced (students will be allowed to remove their masks outside).

Some fall sports are planned to resume while still following guidelines made by the Illinois Department of Public Health and Illinois High School Association.

Art will continue in smaller classes, but music courses will remain online.

Though this school year looks different than previous years, the Ida Crown administration’s hard work has allowed school to remain open and be one of few schools in the Chicago area to have daily in-person school
