The Mechanechet program consists of two mechanchot, Mrs. Jenny Hagage and Mrs. Lynn Kraft. Inspired by Academy Alumni Sara Weiss ‘18, the program aims to provide Academy girls with Judaic teachers that they can look to for Jewish advice and religious confidence.
According to Mrs. Kraft, the Mechanechet program aims to “enhance the culture and spirituality of the female community in Ida Crown, combining fun, Torah, and Chesed.” She hopes that the Academy students will benefit immensely by this program as it aims to provide the girls with exemplary Judaic advisors in school.
Mrs. Jenny Hagage, an alum of Ida Crown and a trained social worker, will be working this year with the Freshmen and Juniors, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday afternoons. Mrs. Lynn Kraft, Tanach Department Chair and Israel Guidance Counselor at Ida Crown, will be working this year with the Sophomores and Seniors, Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday afternoons. Mrs. Hagage and Mrs. Kraft are available throughout the afternoons to talk to girls during their free periods, both formally and informally.
Throughout the year, Mrs. Kraft and Mrs. Hagage intend to expand upon this program and implement activities such as chesed opportunities and fun projects to provide more opportunities for growth during the girls’ free periods.
Mrs. Hagage says she hopes that the mechanechet program will “create an open and comfortable environment to talk about Judaism and to understand where each individual is at with regards to their Jewish identity.” She said “We plan to work with girls on their connections to davening, mitzvot, and halacha.” Together, they also plan to meet with every girl periodically throughout the year.
The hope is that Ida Crown girls will be able to create meaningful relationships with their mechanchot, helping them navigate the different kinds of issues that arise during their high school experiences and preparing them for life afterwards.
